MCI notice to Beed doctors

May 31, 2012 | AA

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has issued a showcause notice to the Beed doctor couple accused of sex determination and subsequent female foeticide. In the notice, the MCI has asked the couple if they could cite any reason why their registration should not be cancelled.
The couple — Dr Sudam Munde and Dr Saraswati Munde — has been absconding since May 18, when Vijaymala M. Pattekar (30) died due to bleeding during the abortion of her female foetus at the Mundes’ clinic. They now have to reply to the MCI’s showcause notice within 15 days, failing which their registration that allows them to practice could be suspended for five years.
The police has also frozen the couple’s bank accounts, and the Beed registrar and commissioner of the Aurangabad division have been given instructions not to allow any transactions based on any of the couple’s properties. Maharashtra home minister R.R. Patil has also sought a report from the Beed police on whether there were any influential persons supporting the Mundes.
Meanwhile, Vidya Chavan, president of the NCP’s women wing on Wednesday met chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar and the home minister Mr Patil demanding action against senior police inspector Ramrao Ghadge. She also demanded that Dr Sudam Munde be arrested immediately. The CM has promised her that the doctor will be arrested within the next two or three days. Mr Patil too said it doesn’t matter where the doctor is hiding, he would be found and brought to book.
Ms Chavan, along with a delegation of women from the Beed district, brought to the notice of the ministers that their demand for the senior PI’s arrest was due to a report he had submitted to the judicial magistrate on May 19. The report stated that there was no need to apply the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act and the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act to the case of Vijaymala Pattekar’s death. The delegation alleged that this report had enabled the Mundes to escape the clutches of the law.
“We had taken up the issue with the home minister and the CM. We have been fighting against the menace and will be taking this issue to the highest levels till action is taken against both the Mundes and Ghadge,” Ms Chavan said.
